Counseling Q&A

What is counseling?

Counseling is a collaborative process between your child and their health care provider to discuss behaviors and the thoughts and emotions that lead to them. Counseling also helps you, as a parent, identify solutions to problems that cause their distress.

At Sugar Land Pediatrics, Dr. Adebo helps your child set goals and works with them on their specific behavioral changes as needed. They can learn and practice strategies for dealing with negative thoughts, feelings, and actions.

Dr. Adebo offers compassionate counseling for weight loss, nutrition, lifestyle habits, and mental health. She works closely with your child, providing a welcoming and non-judgmental environment to explore their areas of concern.

Why would my child need counseling?

Sugar Land Pediatrics is committed to your child’s entire well-being, which includes both their physical and mental health. Dr. Adebo may recommend counseling as part of customized treatment plans to address several health issues, including:

  • Weight management
  • Exercise and diet habits
  • Lifestyle habits
  • Stress management
  • Mental health conditions like ADHD

If your child or teenager has trouble making healthy changes, counseling can help them learn how to effectively make those changes and maintain them.

What happens during a counseling appointment?

Your child spends time talking with Dr. Adebo during their counseling appointment. At their first visit, Dr. Adebo may conduct a physical exam or an assessment to learn about your child and their physical or mental health. The evaluation should feel like a conversation. They’ll spend time sharing information about their daily routine.

Following the evaluation, Dr. Adebo creates a treatment plan that includes objectives and goals to help your child resolve health problems. They’ll develop the skills and strategies needed to lead an active and fulfilling life.

Depending on your child’s needs, Dr. Adebo may include a variety of health care services, including medically supervised weight loss management, customized nutritional counseling, or other wellness services. If your child has a mental health condition, she may refer your child to a specialist for talk therapy or other treatments.

If you’re interested in counseling or concerned about your child’s physical or mental health, call Sugar Land Pediatrics or schedule an appointment online today.
