What are well-child checkups?

Well-child checkups at Sugar Land Pediatrics are visits that assess your child’s health and wellness. Dr. Adebo is highly experienced in completing wellness exams and uses them as a tool to improve your child’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

These exams detect possible medical conditions before they turn into worrisome problems. She offers preventive care, such as childhood vaccinations, to reduce the chance of certain illnesses. What happens during well-child checkups?

During wellness check-ups at Sugar Land Pediatrics, Dr. Adebo greets you and your child and may complete the following:

Initial evaluation

Dr. Adebo assesses your child’s pulse, blood pressure, height, weight, and temperature. Then, she evaluates their growth and development using a growth chart, as well as their body mass index (BMI). She may ask questions about your child’s medical history, medication regimen, and lifestyle habits. 

Physical exam

Next, she performs a physical exam, evaluating the eyes, ears, throat, breathing, heartbeat, reflexes, and more to screen for potential medical problems. Your child may also undergo vision and hearing screenings.

Diagnostic testing

If your child is at risk of a health condition or develops unusual symptoms, Dr. Adebo may recommend diagnostic tests. She might suggest blood tests, urine testing, asthma or allergy testing, heart-function tests, or imaging procedures.

Treatment

Any time your child needs treatment for an illness, disease, or injury, Dr. Adebo offers medication prescriptions and other options to help them properly manage their medical condition. If your child needs care from a specialist, she refers you to highly trained providers who can help.

When should I schedule well-child checkups?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends scheduling routine well-child checkups for infants, children, and teens at the following ages:

• 3-5 days old
• 1 month old
• 2 months old
• 4 months old
• 6 months old
• 9 months old
• 12 months old
• 18 months old
• 2 years old
• 2 ½ years old
• 3 years old
• Annually after age 3
